The Iowa Wave is a tradition at the University of Iowa's Kinnick Stadium, where the fans and players take part in a coordinated moment of solidarity and support for children and families in the hospital. At the end of the first quarter of every home football game, the crowd turns and waves toward the UI Stead Family Children's Hospital, which is located just adjacent to the stadium.
The tradition started in 2017 and involves fans, coaches, and players pausing for a moment to wave to the hospital windows, where patients and their families are watching the game. The gesture symbolizes support, empathy, and connection between the community and the children and families battling illness. It has become a beloved and emotional part of Iowa's game days, drawing widespread attention for its heartfelt sentiment. It truly is the greatest tradition in college football.
